To most educated persons this question seems silly. They may have seen the earth’s roundness as a shadow on the moon during a lunar eclipse. They may have  seen numerous photos of the earth from spacecraft and satellites that show a spherical earth. They may have seen ships disappear over the horizon. These evidences of a spherical earth are powerful and consistent and can be used to develop knowledge concerning the shape of the earth without the need for any input from authority figures.

So, the question is silly from scientific and common sense viewpoints. But, please stay with me as I attempt to show how many of us could believe in a flat earth. This is an article about the powerful influence of certain false authority figures in our culture today.

Evolutionists have in the past mocked the views of biblical creationists by making statements such as believing in a literal biblical creation is like believing in a “flat earth.” And, even today there are a few people who claim, on their internet websites, that they have indisputable proof that the earth is indeed flat. This article is not about either of those positions.

The scientific evidence against millions of years and Darwinian evolution is overwhelming.  Yet we have literally millions of people in the western world who say they believe these ideas in some form or other. The apostle Paul explains how this comes about, and that these people have no excuse (see Romans chapter one in the Bible). But, the desire to reject the Creator God is great in the world due to the power that Satan has over the world. The ideas of evolution and deep time have resulted because of those who would like to think it possible to raise men to be higher than God.

In today’s culture these anti-biblical ideas largely prevail beause of a lack of humility by those in power, especially in academia, who have a great amount of specialized knowledge. (I like to say that often times they have learned more and more about less and less until they know everything abut nothing.) This condition results in intellectuals actually believing that they are smarter than everyone else. In academia this condition of “smartness” is self-perpetuating to the point that many intellectuals actually believe they are above God. Since they are the ones who control the education of most everyone else, the God-less attitude is taught to all those who study at university level.

The first to be taken in by this are the seminary theologians who do not bother to do any simple research of their own that could prove to them that these intellectuals are fools. The other groups who buy the evolutionary nonsense are those who are in the powerful mainstream media, those who control what is taught in our public schools, all liberal associations and political parties and Hollywood. In fact, it is so prevalent in the culture that it has become the official worldview of our governmental bureaus, as well as our courts. The last poll I saw reported that the ratio of Democrats to Republicans for university educators today is 17:1. That’s right it is seventeen to one! I think that ratio provides a good indication of how much critical thinking is going on in our colleges and universities today. A Darwin doubter has little or no chance of surviving in this environment!

So, the culture is driven to believe a lie by these self-appointed authority figures. Does that absolve those Christians who accept these opinions? Does it absolve the theistic evolutionists, gap theorists and progressive creationists of the Christian church? Absolutely not! God’s general and special revelations are there for everyone to see, and the truth is evident to all. The final judgment will be an individual event for each and every person.

What if it were the position of these intellectuals that the earth is flat? I submit that we would have a high percentage of the same people who now believe in evolution who would believe accordingly in a flat earth. Granted, I don’t know what the primary presupposition would be to drive this “flatist” philosophy, but if one were to be found, then about half the people in the west would be flatists.

Should this happen, the Christian church would be filled with theistic flatists, with a high percentage of them thinking that vocal Christian “sphericists” were nothing but trouble makers in the church. The liberal Bible Scholars would interpret God’s Word to say that the earth was flat and that Christian sphericists should be ignored. The secular flatists would conjure up many phony “scientific” arguments for a flat earth such as the Bedford level experiment by Samuel Rowbotham. (Look it up.)

In conclusion, if you are one who believes today in the Big Lie of evolution and deep time, have you really examined the true science and your presuppositions? Do you really want to hold to your ignorance and the batch of bad presuppositions? For if you choose to hold to them, you are simply relying on a load of falsity from a bunch of fake authority figures. They are promoting a God-less religion that is as phony as a flat earth. Please consider, too, the severe consequences of having this false flat-earth-like worldview that is completely devoid of all hope.

Postscript: In light of the paragraphs above, perhaps a short discussion on the topic of eternal salvation is in order. I cannot speak for everyone, of course, but for me (as an evolutionist to the age of forty years) it was completely impossible to accept Christ as my Lord and Savior when he was powerless. And, Christ was powerless for me until I came to realize who he really was – that he really was, and is, the Creator God with the power to redeem! [See my testimony here.]

Here is another way to understand this concept: “Christianity has fought, still fights, and will fight science to the desperate end over evolution, because evolution destroys utterly and finally the very reason Jesus’ earthly life was supposedly made necessay. Destroy Adam and Eve and the original sin, and in the rubble you will find the sorry remains of the son of god. Take away the meaning of his death. If Jesus was not the redeemer who died for our sins, and this is what evolution means, then Christianity is nothing.”*

Maybe there are born again and saved Christians out there somewhere who are true evolutionists. If so, then they cannot possibly have a consistent, logical worldview. At least their worldview would not properly accept the authority of the Bible in any way I can imagine. If these evolutionist saved souls exist I have no idea how they can reasonably correlate the Christian faith with the false philosophy to which they say they ascribe.
