It seems sometimes as if lving in this world means we must endure many difficult trials. In fact the Bible tells us to expect this, but that our God will protect us and He has a purpose for these trials.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. (Isaiah 43:2)

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. (James 1:2-3)

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12)

These [trials] have come so that your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.  (1 Peter 1:7)

Clearly those Christians who persevere through trials can look forward to marvelous rewards. Among the purposes for trials is the building of our faith that is of great value according to God's word.
