It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested. (Exodus 31:17)

Here God explains the purpose of the Sabbath day and reiterates that the week was designed to commemorate the six-day creation. The week consists of seven days with one day in the seven established for rest.

Initially, Israelites took this Sabbath very seriously and described it as “Holy.” It was a capital crime to work on that day (Exodus 31:15).

For most in the United States and other western nations, the significance of the Sabbath has been totally lost. People today are expected to work at all hours of every day of the week.

However, those who honor God and His creation will do well to make every effort to honor the Sabbath!
