Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly. (Exodus 18:11)

Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, made this statement after he learned of the LORD's rescue of the Israelites from the Egyptians. It seems that Jethro must have had some doubts as to the “greatest God” prior to this supernatural event. It also speaks to the susceptibility all can have to man-made gods that are imagined in order to do away with the Creator God of the universe. Analysis shows that these actions of attempting to diminish God are always prideful.

Satan was the first created being to rebel against God and to attempt to build himself to a position of superiority. This was and is an act of extreme pridefulness. Adam and Eve were next to exhibit this trait, and the humanists and evolutionary pantheists of today similary seek to ignore or replace God.

Thankfully, Biblical Christians have God's word that cautions against pride and greatly encourages our faith. Amen.
