“For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:12)

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! (Philippians 2:8)

“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28)

A common theme of the New Testament is the demonstrated humility of Christ and the call for his followers to show the same humility. But, how difficult it can be for many Christians to exhibit humility in their lives. These verses remind us that from humility comes greatness. Being humble takes concerted practice, but the reward is well worth the effort.
