Blessed is the man whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. (Job 5:17)

He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. (Proverbs 13:24)

My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. (Proverbs 3:11-12)

Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant as the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (Hebrews 12:10-11)

It seems these days that it is unfashionable (or unlawful) to discipline our children, especially in any physical way. This, however, is not is accord with the Word of God. He consistently calls us to chasten our children as necessary in love, not anger, so they will repent from sin. That way we act toward our children as God does toward us, to the long-range benefit of all.
