For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)

This action of Christ is so amazing, and so unusual, that many people cannot come close to believing it. Most secular treatments of Christ's life on earth are only able to depict Jesus as a social revolutionary. His miraculous resurrection and its impact on all of history are seldom, if ever, discussed in these feeble attempts at explaining history.

However, the Bible is consistent in saying that Jesus lowered himself from being the king of the universe to being the least of the least, so that we who believe can have everlasting life. He had no defenders when “the chips were down,” and was totally abandoned (even by the Father) when he died for our sins on the cross.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
(Philippians 2:9-11)
