Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. (1 Peter 5:8-9)

Satan is indeed a powerful adversary. Nevertheless, we are told to “resist him.”

Thankfully we are provided with advice as to how we are to resist him. In Ephesians 6:11 we are told to, Put on the full armor of God so that [we] can take [our] stand against the devil's schemes.

In the same passage we are told what the components of this armor are, and they are as follows:
1. The belt of truth (verse 14).
2. The breastplate of righteousness (verse 14).
3. The gospel of peace (verse 15).
4. The shield of faith (verse 16).
5. The helmet of salvation (verse 17).
6. The word of God (verse 17).

And how very important is the word of God in this battle! When Jesus resisted the devil in the desert, he was successful by properly knowing, and relying on, God's word. (See Luke Chapter 4). Believers must learn to do no less.
