But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights. (Jonah 1:17)
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. (Matthew 12:40-41)
Here we have another of the amazing prophecies of the Bible. Nearly 1000 years passed between the time of Jonah and the time of our Lord Jesus on earth. Jonah was a prophetic type for Christ and for the miracle that would someday bring salvation and life to those who believe. While God prepared the fish for Jonah so he could preach repentance at Nineveh, He performed an even more spectacular miracle for us through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus.
How wonderful is the love of God for His children!
